Coney Island, Brooklyn, New York City

Here is a nice video piece put together by the New York Times on Coney Island from the Summer of 2007 celebrating the impending closing of Astroland.

CBGB 315 Bowery, New York City (draft)

Here is a Google street shot of the club -- with a UPS truck in front of it! You may need Explorer and Adobe Flash Player 9 to see this.

Here are some Rolling Stone Rock and Roll Diary stories about CBGBs.

Probably the most famous music venue of the late 1970s, early 1980s in New York City, CBGBs closed earlier this year. There are lots of great books about CBGBs and some great websites.

The Wikipedia website is comprehensive and let's you know what the letters of CBGBs stand for.

(Little) Stevie Van Zandt spearheaded a doomed "Save CBGBs" campaign and the CBGB "brand" lives on on this merchandize site.

Wolfgang'sVault has concerts by Talking Heads and Patti Smith recorded at CBGBs which you can stream.

Video of some of the more famous bands that played the venue has been commercially released and repacked and released. Here is a clip from Punking Out filmed in 1977 and a 45 second excerpt of Richard Hell and the Voidoids singing "Blank Generation" from the same film.

Here is a link to the wonderful Heart on a Stick blog with lots of links to performances at CBGBs in commemoration of Hilly Kristal.

Question: Why are Talking Heads pictured on the sleeve of the CBGBs double LP when they appear on the records?

Everything on album was pretty poor and not really rep of punk new wave or even goo rnr. Think I went to see The Only Ones. Definitely saw The Police. Can't remember how those tickets came about. Very uncomfortable venue will no sight lines. A couple of years ago I went to cbs gallery next door to see Sherman Ewing Bubbles' walker the dog walkers band play there. Last time I went in to cbs was about a month before it closed. I asked at the bar if I could get an extra large T. They came back with an earl grey teabag steeping in a glass pint mug of boiling water. After the 50 year old punk nostalgist (me) explanined an extra large white on black tshirt would be more in order there was much gaffawing and everyone had a story. Also saw the Police at the Diplomat. Never saw them at ginormodome but listening to live recordings of the time and bootlegs of the current tour, they are a very good live band. Funny how both Only Ones and Police have reunited to tour this year both with original line-ups. Now Cbs has become a mall store (isn't that what St Marks Place is) and the bran continues. Sv zants live compilation looks much more interesting than the first live at cbs. Lots has been recorded there and release officially. I am partial to the Richard Hell ec collab on the stones "shattered" which you can find on the RH Time compilation. Rumors of cbs moving to lv seem unlikely and unnecessary. Like the Mudd Club also referred to in th's. Song __ lyric quote. It's over.
